Cervical health is an important part of a woman’s overall health, yet many women do not think about it until there is a problem. When people hear about cervical health, cervical cancer often comes to mind.

The good news is this: cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers when the right steps are taken early.

With regular screening, vaccination, and healthy lifestyle choices, many women can stay protected and live healthy lives.

What You Can Do to Protect Your Cervical Health:

  1. Go for Regular Screening: Regular screening helps find problems early, often before symptoms appear. Tests such as the Pap smear and HPV test can detect abnormal changes in the cervix. Women aged 21 to 65 years should get screened as advised by a healthcare professional.

Early detection saves lives.

  1. Get the HPV Vaccine: Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the main cause of cervical cancer. The HPV vaccine helps protect against this infection. It is recommended for girls and boys aged 9–14 years, but adults who missed it earlier can still benefit.

Vaccination offers long-term protection (learn more here)

  1. Know the Warning Signs: Early cervical cancer may not show symptoms, which is why screening is so important. However, see a healthcare provider if you notice:
  • Unusual vaginal bleeding
  • Bleeding after sex
  • Persistent pelvic pain
  • Foul-smelling vaginal discharge
  • Do not ignore these signs.
  1. Practice Safe Sex: Safe sexual practices reduce the risk of HPV infection. Follow the ABC of prevention:
  • A – Abstain from extramarital sex
  • B – Be faithful to your partner
  • C – Condom use, especially if you have new or multiple partners

Condoms reduce risk, though they do not give 100% protection since HPV can spread through skin-to-skin contact.

  1. Maintain Good Personal and Vaginal Hygiene: Avoid harsh soaps and unnecessary douching, as these can upset the natural balance of the vagina. Wear breathable cotton underwear to keep the area clean and dry.
  1. Stop Smoking: Smoking weakens the immune system and increases the risk of cervical cancer. Quitting smoking improves both cervical health and overall well-being.
