“Everyone deserves access to anti-inflammatory inhalers”

Having the right inhaler is very important, but it’s not the whole story.

Even with medication, asthma can still get worse if you don’t know what triggers it.

The truth is simple: You can’t control asthma if you don’t understand your triggers.

In Nigeria, everyday things like dust, smoke, infections, and weather changes can silently worsen asthma.

But the good news is that once you recognize your triggers, you can take control.

How to Identify Your Triggers

Ask yourself:

  • When do my symptoms start?
  • Where am I when it happens?
  • What was I exposed to?
  • Does it get worse during Harmattan or certain seasons?

Asthma symptoms often follow a pattern

 What Are Asthma Triggers?

They are things that irritate your airways and cause:

  • Cough
  • Wheezing
  • Chest tightness
  • Shortness of breath

Many are allergens, but infections (like flu) can also trigger asthma attacks.

 How to Manage Your Triggers:

  • Avoid triggers when possible
  • Reduce exposure
  • Prepare ahead (with your healthcare provider)

Preventer inhalers (anti-inflammatory inhalers) help protect your lungs before symptoms start.

Preventive vaccines (like flu vaccine) can also help reduce asthma flare-ups triggered by infections.

Common Triggers and What to Do:

  1. Dust and Dust Mites
  • Wash bedding weekly
  • Reduce rugs and stuffed toys
  • Keep rooms well ventilated
  1.  Cockroaches
  • Keep your home clean
  • Dispose waste daily
  • Fix leaks and seal cracks
  1. Pollen and Mold
  • Clean damp areas
  • Fix water leaks
  • Keep environment dry
  1. Cigarette Smoke
  • Do not smoke
  • Avoid second-hand smoke

Asthma control is not just about treatment, it’s about prevention.

  • Know your triggers
  • Avoid what you can
  • Use your inhaler as prescribed
  • Stay up to date with recommended vaccines
